I am so excited to be twinning with my good friend Helen, of Style Inherited, today to style our mutual favorite dress! If you don’t know Helen, she is a New England life and style blogger, but more importantly a great friend, Pinterest queen, and has the most adorable kitchen and dog (yep!). We wanted to share this swing style dress with you guys today because this silhouette works so well on a variety of body types! This is less about the dress itself, and more about how to find pieces that work for various body types! I am wearing the plus size version and Helen is in the straight sized / regular version, yet we both pull it off so seamlessly.
Twinning with a friend or family member can have it’s sets of challenges if you are in different size ranges, but if you want to truly twin in the same outfit, the biggest tip I can give is to find a retailer who carries both regular and plus, and who actually has TRUE plus proportions! Brands that have real plus proportions include Loft, Anthropologie, Talbots and Lands’ End and more recently J. Crew. I also shop at other retailers who do not have true proportions and they work just fine, but when you’re standing next to a friend whose proportions will be tailored to their body, anything that might not be perfect for yours could stand out. Plus proportions means they used a plus size fit model to build their garments instead of just enlarging the regular sized proportions! Aka no oversized armpit holes or arms too long!
If you don’t want to wear the exact same piece, its easy to put together outfits formed on basics (i.e. a basic leather skirt and white tee), that will look similar but maybe not identical! Select classic silhouettes that are a-line, swing or flowy, those look good on all bodies regardless of size! I think that Helen and I both look fab in this dress, and we are on opposite sides of the sizing spectrum, but it is our CONFIDENCE and comfort that make us both look beautiful. CONFIDENCE is the MOST IMPORTANT TIP OF ALL. Have fun with your girlfriends, laugh, smile and remember you’re doing this for you.
More about the dress itself, this JUST SOLD OUT! But, I linked similar styles below! Anything with an easy swing silhouette and a v-neck are always the way to go if you ask me, and make for a comfy, flattering look. I can see myself wearing these through early Fall with a cardigan or denim jacket.
I loved how Helen wore hers at the beach, it is really perfect for any scenario!
